Hockey: 2011 CIS Women's Hockey Championship Gold Medal St. FX(2) vs McGill(5)

WATERLOO, Ont. - Tournament MVP Jordanna Peroff, a senior from Keswick, Ont., scored once and added an assist as McGill skated to a 5-2 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women to capture the school’s third national CIS women’s hockey championship.

The victory capped an unblemished season for the Martlets, who racked up a stellar 33-0 record against Canadian university opponents. McGill, which had a 26-12 margin in shots, led 1-0 after the opening period and 3-0 after two.

"This one ranks right up at the top of the three that we`ve won," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "It`s the culmination of 33 wins and capped a tremendous season, which was a lot tougher than most people think."

Peroff shared the tourney scoring lead with five points, including a pair of goals. Also scoring for the Martlets was Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., Jasmine Sheehan of Mississauga, Alessandra Lind-Kenny of Calgary and Caroline Hill, a fifth-year senior from Dorval, Que., who was credited with the game-winner.

Suzanne Fenerty, a rearguard from Cole Harbour, N.S., and Carolyn Campbell of Ottawa, replied for StFX, who trailed 4-0 before Fenerty put one past Olympic netminder Charline Labonté of Boisbriand, Que.

“For us to be in this final and to compete in this tournament and win games at this level,” said Dave Synishin, head coach of the X-Women, whose team lost for the first time. “We are very proud of what this team has accomplished. This is another step for our program. We realized today in this final what it really takes.”
StFX finished with a 29-1 record in league and playoff action and a silver-medal finish, the best result ever by an Atlantic conference team.
