Rugby: U20 CANADA INTRASQUAD GAME CREATES SELECTION DILEMMA

Monday, March 21, 2011 - Submitted by Doug Crosse in Richmond Hill, ON

The first of the 2011 U20 Assembly camps took place with a new approach to the selection process playing out for first year Coach Mike Shelley.

Two teams were selected from across the country to play in a trial game at Shawnigan Lake School, capping a weekend long camp at the Vancouver Island base.

"Selection involved nominations from Regional Academy Managers and provincial coaches," explained Shelley. "The idea was to put the players in an intense competitive environment surrounding the build up to the game.

"Both teams had 3 training sessions to work on a game plan built around phase play options.

"Emphasis was on attacking and defending from rucks with very simple starter plays and set piece options.

"Coaches were looking for attitude, ability and above all, players expressing themselves and having a go."

The teams were named the Barbarians, coached by Quentin Fyffe and the Wolfhounds - featuring Pat Parfrey and Mike Clayton with Wolfhounds. Mike Shelley worked with both teams throughout the weekend.

A very even battle ensued with team mates against team mates adding to the spice. Some very good rugby played by some very talented players. Both teams exceeded expectations on all fronts and left coaches with some difficult decisions to make. The Wolfhounds prevailed 33-25.

The team that will travel to the Junior World Trophy in Georgia in May will be named next month.
