Basketball: Cegep Vanier College RSEQ 2010-2011 Champions

In the Men’s semi-final game, Lenny Austin hit an off-balance shot off of one foot at the buzzer to give the Cheetahs an exciting 84-82 triumph over Champlain-St. Lambert. The Cheetahs faced a 25-20 deficit after the first frame but a 7-0 run to start the second quarter propelled them to a 42-39 lead at halftime. It was a see-saw battle in the third quarter that left both teams knotted at 63-63.

Vanier and Champlain-St. Lambert exchanged 7-0 runs in the fourth quarter before the Cheetahs took a 2-point lead. Vanier fouled with one second remaining and Champlain-St. Lambert hit both free throws to tie the game and set up Austin’s heroics off of a set play after the Cheetahs’ called a time-out. Michael Fosu had a tremendous game with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Lenny Austin also chalked up 17 points. Jerome Blake, Seth Amoah and Ben Millaud rounded out a balanced scoring attack with 16, 15 and 10 points respectively in this incredible victory.

The Cheetahs then captured their first Provincial title since 2005 with a well-earned 86-82 decision on Sunday over the defending champion Ste. Foy behind an amazing performance by Tournament MVP Jerome Blake who netted 41 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. The Cheetahs got off to a slow start as they fell behind 24-9 in the first quarter but narrowed the gap to 24-14 after the first period and then came on strong in the second quarter to go into the locker room trailing by a 42-40 count.

Another see-saw battle saw Vanier take a 7-point advantage in the third quarter and then Ste-Foy rallied to draw even 61-61. Ste. Foy then built up a 6-point lead with only 3:26 to play before Jerome Blake and Lenny Austin combined to score the Cheetahs final 14 points of the game. Vanier went ahead 85-79 but a Ste. Foy 3-pointer made the score a 3-point difference. Blake came through one again, nailing a foul shot and secure the 4-point victory.

Lenny Austin scored 22 points to make the tournament all-star team along with Michael Fosu. Also of note, Malcolm Henderson recorded 8 points and 4 rebounds and Brent Browne contributed 6 points and 9 boards in the title match.

One for the record books: Jerome Blake's 41 point performance in the final is the most points ever by a Cheetah in a championship game. Click on the photo of Jerome at left for a larger version.
